Think of it: an 18 wheeler filled with books – 40,000 of them. That many words could form a novella. That many books can help shape the reading capacity of a generation in a community.
But they don’t just hop off the truck and into the hands of organizations and families. Volunteer to help sort and distribute this gift. Star City Reads has arranged the donation from the nonprofit First Book. It’s extraordinary, and putting some time in during the first week in October is sure to be rewarding work.
Signing up is easy. More details are available online and you can pick your own slot or two between October 3 and 7. Volunteer HERE. There are both daytime and evening slots available. And festival volunteers are needed for the annual Melrose Neighborhood Fall Festival and Book Fair on October 7.
Star City Reads is Roanoke’s collaborative Campaign for Grade Level Reading, and this is just one opportunity to get involved in this transformative initiative. See you there. Volunteer here. ★
