★ Be the next Writer on the Bus: Apply by Dec. 15

The City of Roanoke Arts Commission, Ride Solutions and the Greater Roanoke Transit Authority are again sponsoring a mobile residency for an area writer or writers.  The 2018 Writer on the Bus will be provided a bus pass and paid an honorarium of $1,000 to create a unique work of literature while riding different bus routes.

The resulting work may be in any genre including short stories, poetry, essays, plays, etc. and may also be multimedia and include art, music or photography. The work will be published on the participating organizations’ web sites and other venues. Past writers have worked with school groups, engaged a community of writers, and read their work at City Council meetings and public events. There have been three writers by bus in the tenure of the program: Melanie Almeder, Meighan Sharp, and Shari Dragovich.

dragovich2Dragovich, the 2017 Writer by Bus, encourages writers to apply. “Do it,” she says. “I have been deeply enriched—as a writer and a person—by the Writer on the Bus experience. It is much more than a way to stretch your creative writing wings. It is an opportunity to have positive, generational impact on our community through the arts.”

Each of the writers to date has produced a chapbook. The publications are available for download and purchase at the Ride Solutions website.

Individuals or groups may submit an application by submitting an entry form, a writing sample, resume and references. A panel of sponsoring organizations and community members will review the applications and select the writer or writers from the applicants. The panel seeks to have content that is original, family friendly, creative and constructive.
