Three journalists and authors will participate in the event. Each has produced important work that helps us better understand the economic and social conditions of rural Virginia and Appalachia. Eric Eyre received the 2017 Pulitzer Prize for Investigative Reporting for his work at the Charleston (W. Va.) Gazette-Mail. Monica Hesse is the author of American Fire: Love, Arson, and Life in a Vanishing Land. And Roanoke-based Beth Macy has most recently released Dopesick: Dealers, Doctors, and the Drug Company that Addicted America.

Part of an emerging strategy to provide engaging literary programming across the commonwealth, the event will take place at Roanoke’s Jefferson Center.

“The programming in our annual Virginia Festival of the Book demonstrates the importance of books in shaping community conversations,” said Sarah Lawson, assistant director of the Virginia Center for the Book. “We’re pleased to have opportunities to do more across Virginia throughout the year and we’re looking forward to a really good discussion in Roanoke.

The event will be  moderated by Dr. Reginald Shareef of Radford University. Community questions and a book signing will follow. Tickets are $5 and include a $5 voucher toward one of the featured books, being sold that evening by local bookstore Book No Further.

This event is included in the October listing of Roanoke Valley Reads events, all focused on themes of empathy and civic action. Track your interest through the Facebook event here.★
