★ Reading Into Art: Call for book inspired art

Book No Further and Art on 1st are partnering for the second Reading into Art, a celebration of the literary and visual creativity of our local community. Artists are invited to read one of the following books by a local literary star and bring some part of it to life in a creative way. As part of the collaboration, books must be purchased at Book No Further.

Submit by April 15.

Malone Ridge
James K. Dill
Eve Malone, living an unsettled life caring for her mother in West Virginia, escapes tragedy to start anew in Alexandria, but when a once-dashed dream calls her back to Malone Ridge, she must choose between the life she’s built and all she’s escaped.

Norvel: An American Hero
Kenneth F. Conklin
This is an inspiring and uplifting story about Norvel Lee, a Botetourt native whose unwavering determination and courage allowed him to overcome obstacles and achieve greatness.

Cities on a Hill
Josh Urban
Two weeks is a long time when you’re ninety. While America spent two weeks to flatten the curve of COVID-19, then two more, and then two more, indefinitely, the elderly in nursing homes missed holidays, family, and their last months. Some were content, others went insane. Many died alone. All were inspirational. This is a witnessing of their days.

Where You Come From Is Gone
Annie Woodford
A collection of poems that examines the economic and racial violence of rural America, where whiteness is a fraught and often dysfunctional identity.

True As True Can Be
Thorpe Moeckel
The story of Lucinda Mae explores the lifeways of rural mountain families who remain tied to traditional ways of living, such as raising hogs, poultry, hunting squirrels, and using local plants for medicine, among others.
