How do we talk with each other about divisive issues? Katherine Devine pulled this book group together after a conversation with Delegate Sam Rasoul. As “Sam’s (Book) Club (on Civil Discourse),” we read The Righteous Mind by Jonathan Haidt, and the group met twice. The group is going to continue reading books on improving the quality of interaction in the public sphere. As New Connections Book Club, a different elected official will host a conversation on a different book. We’ll meet quarterly.
The next title was suggested by Roanoke City Council Member Bill Bestpitch. Parker J. Palmer’s HEALING THE HEART OF DEMOCRACY: The Courage to Create a Politics Worthy of the Human Spirit will be discussed in June 2018. “It could really be called Healing the Heart of Community,” says Bestpitch. “I think it will start a good conversation.”
So Start reading, and watch for a discussion date coming soon!
