You might be the next Writer by Bus.

The City of Roanoke Arts Commission, Ride Solutions and the Greater Roanoke Transit Authority are partnering to once again to present a unique literary opportunity in summer 2020.

A writer (or writers) will be provided a bus pass and paid an honorarium of $1,000 to create a unique work of literature while riding different bus routes. The work may be in any genre including short stories, poetry, essays, plays, etc. and may also include art, music or photography. The work will be published in the form of a chapbook as well as on the participating organizations’ websites and other venues as available.

In addition to the Writer by Bus, Art by Bus in 2020 will again feature a visual art component: mobile art on Valley Metro busses passing through Roanoke neighborhoods daily.

The goals of the project are to draw attention to the important role public transportation plays in connecting our neighborhoods and communities while highlighting the creative and artistic opportunities that surround Roanoke residents.

Individuals or groups may submit an application to be the 2020 Writer by Bus by submitting an entry form, a writing sample, résumé and references. A panel composed of representatives from the sponsoring organizations and community members will review the applications and select the writer or writers from the applicants. The panel seeks to have content that is original, family friendly, creative and constructive.
