A couple of years ago, we took our Finding Roanoke project on the road with the Virginia Main Street program as “Finding Main Street.” In the project, we used the lens of Dar Williams’ What I Found in a Thousand Towns to look at local efforts that illustrated the placemaking concepts.
The very first stop was Books and Crannies, a black-owned bookstore in Martinsville, Virginia.
Owner DeShanta Hairston is still going strong and has been in the news lately as local voices rise in a critical national conversation. Check out this morning’s piece, “Embracing Black Owned Businesses” from WVTF to hear DeShanta’s voice.
And watch the Finding Main Street video below for a virtual visit to her store. Then shop online at https://www.booksandcranniesva.com.
